Our vision

It is our vision here at JSW that we are able, both now and in the future, to demonstrably contribute in a socially,
ethically and environmentally-responsible way to the development of a society where the needs of all are met,
and to do so in a manner that does not compromise the ability of those that come after us to meet the needs
of their own, future generations.

Our commitments

Committed to source 100% energy from Renewable energy sources, across all our operations globally by 2050.

Committed to deploying all electric vehicles for transportation by 2030.

Committed to double our energy productivity by 2037-38 compared to 2013-14 baseline.

Significant strides in sustainability

JSW Cement is all about building smart, futuristic and sustainable solutions.
These are our stories of bringing innovation, technology and low-carbon solutions to change the building sector in India.

Circular economy: Using blast furnace slag for cement manufacturing at all plants

In our efforts to run an inherently circular business, we are increasing the content of Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) in Portland Slag Cement (PSC) to more than 50%. This helps in decreasing clinker factor along with reduction in carbon emissions by 12-15%. We are using polymer additive to reduce the clinker factor. To start this application, we purchased the polymer additive and developed it in-house.

We have developed the in-house additive, which is used in cement grinding and which helps in reduction of clinker consumption in every tonne of cement produced. By this initiative we were able to reduce our clinker consumption of ~ 45,890 tonnes at our Salboni and Jajpur plants.

Co-processing hazardous and non hazardous waste

Nandyal plant commenced co-processing in 2015 and have since co-processed different types of waste streams like hazardous waste, liquid effluent, industrial waste, biomass, dolachar, plastic waste, among others. This helps us avoid landfill of these wastes from different sources through eco-friendly co-processing. By using other wastes, we are not only providing waste management solutions but also reducing our dependence on traditional fossil fuels and overall CO2 emissions from our manufacturing process

Usage of waste heat from cooler and coal mill for slag drying

Nandyal plant began using waste heat from cooler and coal mill stacks since 2017 for drying of slag. Before this initiative was operationalised, we used to fire coal to generate hot gases, which were in-turn used for slag drying in the mill. Following this initiative, we eliminated the usage of coal for generating hot gases, thus reducing our overall CO2 emissions.

Installing solar power plants at our units

We currently have 9 MW capacity solar power plants, of which 5.5 MW was installed at Nandyal and 3.5 MW at Salboni. Through this, we are currently able to meet 3.15% of our overall electrical energy consumption. As we are using solar power, the equivalent of grid power consumption is has been brought down.

Rainwater harvesting at all our plants and the Nandyal Mines

All our plants are equipped with rainwater harvesting systems within our plant premises. At Nandyal, we do harvest rainwater in our worked out mine pit. The rain water harvested in a worked out mine pit will act as a water reservoir and also helps in improving the ground water table in & around our plant premises.

Developing green belts in and around our plants and mines

Our plants are surrounded by fully developed greenbelt and we take the utmost care in selecting the native species for effective green belt development. Wherever feasible saplings were purchased from nearest forest department. Once the sapling is planted, necessary steps were taken to maintain, grow the sapling with maximum possible survival rate. In our plant premises drip irrigation was adopted for watering the sapling or plantations.

Keeping the air clean

All our plants are equipped with air pollution control equipment (APCE) that are in the form of bag houses or bag filters depending upon the requirement. All our APCE were designed for outlet emissions greater than 10 mg/Nm3 against the regulatory requirement of greater than 30 mg/Nm3. Through this initiative we keep our immediate surrounding cleaner and safer. It also helps us elevate the quality of life in the plant premises.

Replacing natural resources with alternative raw materials

Across our operations we are using alternative raw materials in place of natural resources in cement manufacturing. Chemical gypsum is being used instead of natural or mineral gypsum thus maximising the life of natural resources. Fly ash is used in-place of clinker for manufacturing PPC, thus avoiding the usage of natural limestone for clinker production. This is enabling us to bring down mining activity CO emissions from the overall product footprint.

Our well-rounded sustainability strategy

Our strategy is aligned to the JSW Group, and its objective is
to keep us on the path of making sustainable manufacturing commonplace.

JSW Cement - Our sustainability framework

Our sustainability framework

Management Standards

These are documents which will set out exactly how each site and/or business within the JSW Group will perform certain activities related to the key elements of our Framework. They will describe how our sites, and how some of our Group functions, shall set and deliver objectives, manage changes, manage their supply chain, collect performance data and report it, carry out new projects, etc.

Policies

For many of the sustainability issues that are likely to affect our sites, or our Group as a whole, we will be defining certain expectations. These may be things we do not want to happen at all in our businesses (e.g. child labour), or things we may aspire to achieve (e.g. carbon neutrality), or things we require all our sites and businesses to do (e.g. comply with laws and regulations). Such prohibitions, aspirations and requirements relating to a particular sustainability issue will be summarised in a single Policy document against which, ultimately, the success of our Strategy and our Framework can be assessed.

Technical Standards

In order to achieve the expectations defined in a Policy, sites and/or businesses within our Group will be required to perform certain activities the same way to ensure consistency. And hence, the means of undertaking these activities will be defined within a Technical Standard. Sometimes, these Technical Standards may also define things such as minimum performance levels, requirements for generating records, maybe even specific requirements relating to ensuring competence.

Guidance Notes

Where additional information is thought to be relevant in order for requirements within Management Standards or Technical Standards to be delivered, this will be included in a Guidance Note. A Guidance Note won’t include anything that must be done; instead, it will provide further information on how a thing that must be done can be carried out.

Elements of our strategy

Leadership

We are imparting necessary skills and knowledge to our leaders to help them to oversee the implementation and trickling down of our sustainability strategy throughout the organisation.

Communication

We are transparent in our interactions with stakeholders and have defined suitable communication channels to help us convey our strategic decisions and policies to stakeholders effectively

Planning

We are working on developing new and pre-emptive processes and putting our minds together to make our existing ones more effective to ensure overall business resilience.

Reporting

We demonstrate openness towards disclosing our performance through periodic reporting at internal and external levels. This has helped us gain the trust of our stakeholders while making good on our promise to consumers.

Stakeholder Engagement

Our goal is to integrate stakeholder expectations into our offerings and business decisions, and enable their understanding of factors critical to the growth of the ecosystem.

Improvement

We continuously explore improvement areas and growth opportunities to make the system more efficient and are devising mechanisms to fulfil our commitments and minimise material risks to the enterprise.

Monitoring

Continuous monitoring helps us ensure that our policies, plans and decisions are on track to achieving their objectives. It also helps us detect compliance and risk issues through an efficient feedback system.
